A Single Suggestion: Cooking in Sides!

This is my favorite tip regarding cooking for one.  It just allows me to cook so many interesting and varied dishes.  So take note…

What I mean is this:If you cook all side dishes, you can vary your meal of 3-5 sides each night.  It makes for a brand new meal each night and saves you time and money.

What you need: Lots of tupperware!  But I love tupperware, and it’s cheap – so it’s okay.

What you do: Pick a day of the week that you have some extra time to prepare dinner.  It doesn’t require a lot of time, but rather forward thinking and a plan.  Plan to make about 6-8 side dishes that serve about 4.  Vary it in terms of ingredients and general kinds of foods.  You can split it up over two days, too.  Make 3-4 sides dishes at the beginning of the week and 3-4 dishes at the end.  Then you can have a constant rotation of sides from which to make your meals.

Here’s an example:

Make –
Day 1: Turkey Chili, Rice, Steamed vegetables, Hamburger patties, Spinach salad mix (save dressing)
Day 4: Southern green beans, Roasted Sweet Potatoes & Pears, Pasta salad, Grilled boneless chicken

Eat –
Day 1: Chili and spinach Salad
Day 2: Hamburgers with steamed veggies
Day 3: Chili over rice, steamed veggies
Day 4: Grilled chicken, green beans, roasted potatoes and pears
Day 5: Hamburgers, pasta salad
Day 6: Grilled chicken, rice, spinach salad
Day 7: Chili, roasted potatoes and pears

Add extra no-prep sides as needed – such as garlic bread, fruit, yogurt, and fresh vegetables.
