Shopping Summary: Wrapping up June

I made some somewhat random shopping trips during these past two weeks.  And I probably will make one more by the time Friday hits.  Between being out of town and running errands in between to keep up with life – it’s been a bit crazy to say the least. All that’s running through my head is wedding, classroom, blog, wedding, classroom, blog. So many things to plan for!

So in all of that, I made it to Publix last week for a quick trip.  And I made an even quicker trip to Kroger yesterday to grab 2 newspapers and some random ingredients for my meals this week.  Like I always say – my stockpile is saving our budget, my time, and my tummy!!

Here’s what I bought:

Publix
(oh, and the new Publix on Charlotte is ah-may-zing!!)

(2) Juicy Juice, $1.32 ea
(1) Classico prepared pesto, $2.89
(2) Newman’s Own Salsa, $1.00 ea
(2) Kraft Shredded Cheese, $2.99 ea (oops!  I ran out!)

(2) Newspapers, $1.00 ea
(1 lb) Strawberries, $1.89 ea

(1) Parmesan Cheese, $2.48 ea
(4 oz) Pimentos, $1.19 ea

So that wraps up June.  I did spend an extra $70 to complete the Diva Detox (something for me, regardless of budget).  Taking out that week of shopping, I am exactly on par with my $30/week budget.  Boy, I thought it was going to be a lot worse than that with my erratic shopping!  Turned out better than expected!

Monday Meals: June 28 – July 4, 2010

Had a wonderful weekend in Nashville!  If you haven’t seen Toy Story 3, you totally should.  And try out the new Sopapillas Mexican Restaurant in Franklin – it’s delicious.

This weekend we’re off to Orlando to be a part of my dear friend Kelly’s wedding.  I cannot wait to celebrate with her!!  She will be a beautiful bride.  Then, I am flying from Florida to Wilmington, NC.  I will spend all of next week with my great-grandfather and mom.  Grandpa is 94 and doing wonderfully.  As great-grandma travels to D.C. for a conference, we’re just keeping him company and trying out some new recipes.  He’s one of the funniest men I know and I can’t wait to spend quality time with someone so full of life.

As a result, I think my blogging schedule is going to change a bit.  But it’s been off all summer.  I’m thinking about ways to re-vamp/re-conceptualize the blog as I move into a new stage in my life (married with a job!)  If you have ideas and/or encouragement, feel free to comment or email!

Monday: Pasta Primevera

Tuesday: Chicken & Spaghetti Casserole, green beans

Wednesday: Chicken pesto pizza, Romaine salad

Thursday: Jambalaya, Salad with fruit

Friday: Florida! Rehearsal dinner

Saturday: Kelly and Kean’s Wedding!

Sunday: En route to NC

Breakfasts:

Yogurt and granola
Cereal and milk, banana
Oatmeal, strawberries
Green Smoothies

Lunch:

Turkey sandwiches, apple, carrots, yogurt
Tuna Salad and crackers
Leftovers

What’s for dinner at your place this week?

Second Harvest in Need of Donations!

As many of you know, the first weekend of May brought a thousand-year flood to middle Tennessee.  Many businesses and homes were destroyed and families displaced.  As a result, local food banks have seen a 50% increase in the number of families requesting emergency food.

This greater demands calls for Nashville residents to step up to the plate and help out.  As a couponer, I have plenty of extras every week and those extras are certainly in need now.  Can you help?

Here are some donation ideas to get you started:

  • Canned Meals: Stews, Soups, Tuna, Ravioli, etc.
  • Peanut Butter
  • Cereal
  • Canned Fruits and Vegetables
  • Rice, Pasta and Dried Beans
  • Hygiene Items: Toothpaste, Shaving Items, Soap, etc.
  • Infant Products: Diapers, Wipes, Formula, Infant Cereal
  • Paper Products: Toilet Paper, Paper Towels, etc.

Tips n’ Tricks: Seek out Manager’s Specials

I totally utilized this tip this past week to pick up some greatly reduced meat and bread.  So I wanted to pass along this saving-money-trick…

Seek out your store’s manager’s specials. When meat is close to expiration, bread a day old, or produce on its way out, many stores will rewrap or remark these items with lower prices for a quick sale.  Because product shipments come in on a regular schedule, products that don’t sell are marked down on a regular schedule.  You’re job is to figure out when the manager does this!

Just ask! If you ask the meat manager or at customer service, they’ll tell you when products come in and when they are usually marked down.  Remember, it may be on different days for different products.

For example, the Harris Teeter on Harding Road marks many items on manger’s special on Tuesday afternoons.  There are tons of meat markdowns, several bread specials, bags of produce marked for $1.00 each, and even discounted cupcakes and sweets.

One word of caution. Look very, very carefully at actual expiration dates on each marked-down item.  You definitely don’t want to buy past-expired meat, produce, or bread.  And for any marked-down purchase, use that day or freeze immediately.

Harris Teeter: Super Doubles June 23-29, 2010

For Harris Teeter Super Doubles, remember:

  • Coupons that are $1.98 or less are doubled.
  • They will double 20 coupons per day or transaction.
  • They will double only 3 identical manufacturer’s coupons per day and 2 identical internet printable coupons per day.
  • You must use your VIC card to get sales and doubled coupons.
  • B1G1 Free items will ring up 50% off, so you can just purchase 1.
  • Only one coupon per B1G1 deal, so only buy one for the best deal.
